Newport building firm boss saddles up to support Tour de Gwent charity cycling event GWENT buildings services business Whitehead has switched on its sponsorship for the Tour de Gwent cycling challenge in Monmouthshire in aid of St David’s Hospice Care.
Newport-based Whitehead BS managing director Rhys Morton saddled up alongside Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care, to launch this year’s event which takes place on Sunday, March 29.
Keen cyclist Rhys is taking part in the epic 74-mile trip around some of the most spectacular scenery in Wales along with others from Whitehead BS.
Rhys said: “I’ve always said that the Usk Valley is just made for cycling. The route of the Tour De Gwent is both challenging in terms of the route and rewarding.
“Whitehead has had a long association with St David’s Hospice Care which we are delighted to continue. A number of our 150 staff will be involved in the Tour de Gwent on the day from riding to helping out as marshalls on the route.”
The circular Tour de Gwent offers cyclists a 74, 36 or 24 mile course starting at Rougemont School before heading off, depending on which of the three courses your take, into the Usk Valley and then as far as Chepstow and Monmouth before returning to Rougemont for a barbeque.
Father-of-two Kris Broome, who has also signed up for the event, said: “We really can’t thank Whitehead enough for their valuable support. We’re aiming for around 500 cyclists to take part on the day. It’s proving very popular among experienced and less-experienced riders.
“It’s not a race but a personal challenge for each rider. It is an event that we hope to grow over the coming years.”
Cyclists are provided with an exclusive event cycling jersey, maps, water and feeding stations along the route.
Entry fee is £45 per rider. To see the precise routes visit: www.stadavidshospicecare.org and search for Tour de Gwent on the events page
